True and Christlike love is not self-love. Biblical agape love is the opposite of selfishness, because it is self-sacrifice.

We see the love of Jesus announced. On the last day before His crucifixion, Jesus spent the evening with His disciples. He showed them His sacrificial love by washing their feet - a demeaning duty only a slave would do.

We see the love of Jesus misunderstood. Peter didn't understand why his master and teacher would descend to such a low duty, and tried to stop Jesus at first. He did not understand what Jesus was teaching.

We see the love of Jesus communicated. This love is a pattern of serving others in a way that sacrifices what we want. If we say we love, the proof is in what we do. We are blessed if we serve.
