The Gospel According To John
The Humble Servant
John 3:22 - 30
21 March 2021
When you look at John the Baptist, you see a humble man. He knew that all ministers are servants of God, and their role is to point to Christ.
A humble person has a commitment to Christ's prominence. John moved north as Jesus went south in His ministry so that he would not be a distraction. John moved out of his area of success because he was content with his role to point to Christ.
A humble person has no care for personal honor. John's disciples had a dispute, and they felt they had to defend his ministry from Jesus. But John recognized that everything he had came from God. He was content to decrease as Jesus increased.
A humble person understands God's sovereign grace. John knew that it was not his own power that made him prominent. God gave the ministry to John, and had the right to take it away.
A humble person lives for the glory of God. John understood his ministry was never about him. The culmination of his role was to bring the remnant of Israel to the Messiah. He rejoiced to see God glorified.
