Salvation is a sovereign work of God. In Christ alone is the heart opened to understand spiritual things.

Nicodemus was a perfect example of an unbelieving person. Although he held a formidable knowledge of the Old Testament Scriptures, he could not grasp its fundamental message. Without the Spirit, man's inability to save himself seems incomprehensible. But what is impossible with man is possible with God.

Jesus delivered a powerful message to Nicodemus. His message was not from any human authority, but from God, because He was with God. His message of grace through faith was foreshadowed by Moses setting up the bronze snake, that whoever looked at it was healed. In the same way, by looking to Christ who was raised up, we are healed of our sins.
