Jesus condemns superficial and irreverent worship. God desires worshippers who worship in spirit and in truth.

Jesus opposed the profaning of worship. As He came into Jerusalem, the Passover was at hand, and all were traveling to pay the Temple tax. But as Jesus entered the Temple, He saw that it has been turned into a business instead of a house of worship. Because of this, He overturned the money tables and cast them out.

Jesus displayed His zeal for God. Jesus' second sign was cleansing the Temple, showing that He is the prophesied Messiah. His anger was directed against the false religion of the Jewish leaders, when they should have been the ones pointing the nation to God. For we who are purified from sin, we need to approach Him in reverence to worship.
