The Gospel According To John
The First Sign
John 2:1 - 11
03 January 2021
Jesus began His miracles in Cana of Galilee. He was there with His mother and disciples to celebrate a marriage.
Shame and honor were a huge part of the ancient Jewish culture. To have run out of wine at a wedding would have ruined the reputation of the groom. He was expected to provide food and drink, even as he had been provided for at other weddings.
Jesus separates Himself from Mary when she asks for help. She looks to Him as a firstborn, but He makes clear that He is no longer under her authority, but is on His Father's mission. She is not heard from again in the story.
Jesus' sign was to turn the water in the pots to wine. The servants had filled the pots to the brim, and served it to the ruler of the feast - and he was amazed at the quality of it, better than all that came before.
Jesus showed his abundant grace to the newlyweds in providing for, and protecting them. Here He displayed His divinity and power, and His disciples believed in Him.
