How are we to understand the origin of the universe? If we look at the explanation offered to us by the secular world, we need to ask ourselves whether this explanation is compatible with what we read here in John’s gospel. Because John is making the case that Jesus is not only the eternal Son of God, but that He is also the creator of all things. If we undermine the certainty of a created universe, we undermine the importance of obedience to God.

Christ is the Mediator of creation (v. 1 - 3). Before there was anything, there was the Godhead. And John wants to impress upon us the fact that whilst each member of the Godhead was involved in creation, it was through Jesus that the entire created order was mediated. The Father designed the work of creation, the Son mediated the work, the Spirit moved upon it. Therefore Jesus, the eternal Word of God, is the means of Creation. Everything that exists today and has ever existed, exists because Jesus brought it into existence. What’s more, nothing continues to exist without His sustaining power. While the world seeks to replace God with natural processes, Christ made the world through Himself, and for His glory.

Christ is the light and life of the world (v. 4 - 5). Not only is Christ the mediator of creation, he is also life and light. He is the originator of all life, and upholds all things. We then are the stewards of the creation where He has placed us, and life is valuable because it comes from Him. Whilst we live in a world that is opposed to this life and light, may we find our encouragement in Him and wait for His return.
