In the book of Hosea, God describes his relationship with Israel as that of a husband and wife. But in chapter 4, God is bringing a legal charge against them because they have compromised with idols, and now have no relationship with Him at all.

The cause of compromise is adding something else to God's Word. Nothing we add to it will make it purer or stronger, but instead compromises the truth. We act on what we believe, so if we mix error with the truth, we will be led astray by that error. Instead, holding fast to truth is the way we protect ourselves.

The consequence of compromise is God's wrath, which He uses to bring His people back. The leaders should have been guiding Israel in the truth, but instead they had compromised as well, and the people followed. When truth is compromised, the intellect, and true worship is compromised. When we are concerned with material prosperity, we compromise spirituality.
