PSALM 55

The Pain of Betrayal

In the Psalms we get to see experiences that are common to believers of all times. In Psalm 55 we read of a great betrayal by someone who was a close friend. This betrayal is all the more painful because the betrayer has joined with the wicked of the world, who oppress and persecute the people of God. In this psalm we see the continued pattern for the faithful to follow. The psalmist begins by bringing his troubles before the Lord, asking God for help (55:1-3). He is under intense pressure at the hands of the wicked (55:3). Brethren, in the days when you are under tremendous pressure don’t forget the source of your help, God Himself.

The psalmist is in anguish, writhing in fear and terror over the plans and actions of the wicked (55:4-5). He is completely overwhelmed by the evil around him (55:5). If only he had wings he would fly away to a place of safety and quiet (55:6-8). Have you ever been in a situation that is so troubling that all you wish you could do is to flee to somewhere else? Then you can relate to David’s experience.

What made this oppression so unbearable? It was the betrayal of a close friend (55:12-14). The sadness of this rejection is ever present. They have joined in with this world of wickedness that is under God’s judgement and destined for hell (55:9-12,15).

The psalmist pours his heart out to God. He is strong in his faith, having confidence that God will help sustain him in the midst of these trials and bring justice upon the ungodly (55:16-23). Brethren, God will not allow you to go trials that you will not be able to bear (55:22). Trust in Him (55:23).
