PSALM 56

Praise for God’s Word

Where do you go when troubling times come? Where do you seek comfort, security, and counsel when circumstances are hard? David says that he seeks comfort, security, and counsel in the word of God (56:4, 10-11). He praises God’s word, for it is the light of his life (56:13), and gives him confidence in the character of God (56:4).

Can you relate to David’s experience? He is under great pressure by those that are proudly arrayed against him (56:1-2). Do people hate and despise you because you follow Christ and live obediently to His word? Are you fearful and full of anxiety? Follow David’s example and pray for God’s grace (56:1). Davis says that when he is afraid he trusts in God (56:3). He praises God’s word because I it he is reminded that God cares for His people, provides for His people, and protects His people. David asks rhetorically in 56:4, “what can man do to me?” Even though they “stir up strife,” “lurk,” “watch,” and “lie in wait;” they will be brought to justice by the Lord in His righteous anger (56:6-7). Know brethren that as a believer in Christ, God is for you (56:8). He hears your cries and see your tears (56:8-9).

Praise God that when we are in hard circumstances we can turn to God’s word (56:10). We see God’s gracious dealing with His people, and His judgment upon the wicked. God has promised in His word that His grace is sufficient for you in every situation (2 Cor 12:9). Follow David’s example and give praise to God for His word that is sufficient for believers of all time (56:12-13; 2 Peter 1:3).
