PSALM 54

A Prayer for Help

Have you ever faced opposition and evil from people? We live in a world of sin; where evil is both intentional and indiscriminate. David has experienced evil from those that are strangers. They are violent, and have even sought his death (54:3). The hurt and pain caused by those who do not know God is real. David gives us a example of dealing with the painful actions of the ungodly.

The psalm begins with Prayer in 54:1-1-3. He calls upon God to deliver him from the hand of violent men. He asks for vindication from the Lord, so that everyone will understand that this trouble is not because of his own personal sin. Brethren, know that there is only One person with the ability to save you from your trial. Understand that God may will it for you to suffer for His name so that He would be glorified, and you would be conformed to the image of Christ (1 Peter 2:21; James 1:2-4).

The psalmist continues with Confidence in God in 54:4-5. As the psalmist prays he focuses his thoughts on God Himself. He knows that God is his helper in times of trouble. He understands that it is Christ that is the sustainer of His soul. He knows that that God will execute His justice upon the wicked. Brethren, your faith demonstrated in the hard times of life. Look to God for help and sustaining in painful times, knowing that God is faithful.

The psalmist ends with Praise in 54:6-7. He praises God, confident of His goodness, looking ahead to his final victory over the wicked. Brethren, your victory is sure, whether through God’s intervention in this life, or in the next in the presence of Jesus Christ.
