PSALM 59

Attacked Without Cause

Have you ever been slandered or the victim of gossip? Has someone spread lies about you that are untrue? These attacks are hurtful, and cause much damage in people’s lives. David is no stranger to these types of attacks. He describes his circumstances in Psalm 59.

He turns toward God, first of all, for deliverance from his hurtful situation (59:1-2). He asks God to put him out of reach of those that desire his ruin. He knows that he has done nothing that is worthy of their hatred and sinful attacks (59:4). Yet, they desire to hurt him and are treacherous with their lips (59:5-7). These evil people are pictured as dogs who go about at night in packs looking to cause trouble (59:6). They laugh, thinking that they have no accountability and no one knows what they are doing (59:7). They will be caught in their lies and in their pride (59:12).

God sees and God knows what they are doing. David says God laughs at them and scoffs at the ungodly of the world (59:8). David trusts in God as his strength and refuge. He remembers God’s loyal love towards His people in every situation (59:10). God will destroy the wicked and every person on earth will give God the glory He deserves (59:13). David trusts in this and sings praises to God even in the midst of this hard time in his life (59:17). Brethren, trust in the character and promises of God when evil people slander and abuse you. Know that God is your stronghold, and His love is unending (59:16-17).
