Defeat to Victory
Have you ever worked really hard at something only to see it come crashing down before you? Have you ever faced a serious defeat? In Psalm 60, the Israelites were faced with a tremendous defeat that really got their attention. They knew because of Deut 28-29 that if they suffered a defeat at the hands of their enemies that it must be a spiritual issue.
They acknowledge that God is disciplining them (60:1-2). It is so shocking to them that they compare it to an earthquake (60:2). They have been humbled through this hardship, and they stumble about in their defeat. (60:3). David says they have no choice but to pray for God to restore them to a right relationship to Him (60:2). Brethren, you will face setbacks and failures in your life. When these times come you must ask yourself what is God trying to teach you through the circumstance.
The Israelites are reassured that God’s love for them has not changed through His word (60:6-8). God guarantees the subjugation of their enemies, just as He had previously promised to their forefathers in Deut 28-29 (60:8). God also reminds them that His promises cannot fail, as He is still sovereign over the land that He has promised to the descendants of Abraham (60:6-7). Brethren, rest assured in the promises of God. He has promised He will never leave nor forsake His children (Heb 13:5).
The Israelites could have confidence in victory over their enemies only if God was with them (60:11-12). They prayed for restoration with God and help against their adversaries. Brethren, pray during your times of failure and defeat for help from God. He disciplines His children for their own good to bring about a life of humility and holiness (Heb 12:10).
