PSALM 58

Corrupt Magistrates and Their Doom

God has given governments authority to be ministers of justice, restraining evil and protecting the innocent. Sin affects every aspect of our world, and those that populate the government are affected as well. God gives power to men to rule, the abuse of that power is from the evil within men. In Psalm 58 David addresses governmental officials who are abusing their power and working unjustly.

David asks rhetorically if they speak righteousness and judge rightly (58:1)? “No” is the answer! They destroy lives in the name of justice (58:2). It is a habitual practice for them as their hearts are wicked. Just like all men they are born into sin, and their lies are evidence of this sinfulness (58:3). What they say in the name of justice is just as lethal as the bite of a venomous snake (58:4). To make matters worse, they are obstinate and will not listen to the voice of their Master.

David prays that these unjust judges will be rendered powerless and harmless, like a lion without any teeth (58:6). He prays that their decisions and decrees would cause no damage, like an arrow without a tip (58:7). He asks God to destroy them and remove from their positions like the thorn bushes blown about in a whirlwind. (58:8-9).

At the time of God’s justice there will be great rejoicing among the righteous. No longer will they be oppressed by injustice, but will see themselves rewarded for their faithfulness by God (58:10). God’s judgements are good and righteous, unlike the judgments of the evil magistrates. Brethren, know that all those that administer justice with partiality and commit injustice will face justice from the Lord Jesus Christ when He returns (John 5:22).
