God Disciplines Those He Loves
As a parent, I love my kids dearly. I also know that there are often times where they must receive discipline and chastening because of their behavior. A truly loving parent understands that sin must be dealt with in the life of the child because that sin is an affront to God. God is our loving Father (Matt 6:9), and He will discipline His children when they sin (Heb 12:7).
David, here in this psalm, sings praises to the Lord for God’s restoration after disciplining him for his sin. He has been brought up from a sickness that left him close to death (30:1-3). He cried for help and God answered his plea (30:2). After a night of struggle, David now rejoices at God’s intervention (30:5). He writes a truism for all believers: Temporary affliction pales in the light of a lifetime of God’s favor.
God removes His favor to teach David a lesson and he responds appropriately. He confesses his sin before God and the assembly and asks God for help (30:8-10). His success and security has brought about an attitude of pride and ingratitude. He has become presumptuous before God, as if it was his skill and smarts that brought all of his blessings about (30:6-7).
Brethren, God will discipline you at times in order to humble you and help you to see your own sins of pride, selfishness, ingratitude, and presumption. Know that though this affliction may be painful, it is but for a time, and it is for your ultimate good (Rom 8:28-29). Sing praises to the Lord because He loves you and, like David, give thanks to Him forever (30:12).
