Confidence in God (part 1)
Where do you go when life gets tough? Where is your confidence? King David tells us where his confidence lies. “In You, Oh LORD, I have taken refuge” (31:1).
Confidence in the LORD is based off of God’s nature and his past experiences (31:3-4). God is righteous (31:1), strong (31:2), and trustworthy to save (31:2). God continually leads and guides the faithful in their lives (31:3) and delivers them from their enemies (31:4). David knows that God is with him and will continue to be with him because of God’s nature and a lifetime of experiencing God’s faithfulness. You can have that same confidence. The Bible is the key to understanding God’s nature, and your circumstances.
Confidence in the LORD is knowing that no matter what circumstances we are in we can trust God (31:5-6). It is into God’s hand that we can commit our spirit (31:5). Unlike the false idols in this world, our LORD is a “God of Truth.” Unlike the dumb idols, God hears our prayers and cares about our plight. To echo the great hymns, “Thou hast been, and Thou art, my Redeemer.” God is working all things to your greatest good...Christlikeness (Rom 8:28-29).
Confidence in the LORD is expressed in praise and prayer (31:7-11). David celebrates God’s loyal love for His people (31:7). It is this love that is the reason for God’s deliverance and guidance (31:8). In light of God’s love you can cry out to God for mercy in times of trouble and grief (3:9-11). He has seen your plight and knows your troubles, and keeps you from even more grievous harm (31:7-8).
Brethren, praise God for His love, and give thanks for His grace! Trust not in the things of this world, but in Christ alone.
