The Great & Powerful God
Recently we had a great storm pass over our home. The wind blew furiously and the thunder boomed repeatedly. It seemed as if the very earth was shaking. When faced with this great power, believers cannot help but to worship and praise their great God.
David say “Ascribe” to the LORD glory & strength (29:1). This is worship (29:2), acknowledging God’s attributes and works in reverence and awe. David tells of a thunderstorm moving from over the Great Sea, crossing over the inhabited lands of Israel, and then on into the wilderness. The crackles of great thunder are described as “The voice of the LORD” (29:3). There are seven of these throughout this psalm. The thunderous voice of the LORD is powerful and majestic (29:4), it breaks the cedars (29:5), and makes the ground shake (29:6), it shoots out flames of lightning (29:7), shakes the wilderness (29:8), scares the deer into calving and strips the forests bare (29:9). David is watching this great demonstration of the power of God and is humbled by it. His response should be our response. David says all should give God “glory” (29:9). We give God glory by acknowledging through our praise His importance and uniqueness.
David ends this psalm by exalting God as Lord and King (29:10). It was God’s power that was demonstrated during the great flood of Noah. It is this same power that God blesses His people with (29:11). Paul acknowledges what God has for the Colossian church, when he prays they would be “strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might... (Col 1:11). Let us respond to God’s great power in worship and praise and obedience.
