True disciples are free from slavery to sin. Someone who lives in sin can't say no to it, and is a slave.
Without Christ freeing us from sin, we remain in bondage. We are born into sin as children - but faith is not genetic. No lineage, good works, or efforts can free us from sin, only the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We must come to Him one by one, in faith.
In ancient cultures, slaves could be bought or sold - they had no permanent place in the home. But a son inherits a place in his father's house - and so do disciples who know their Saviour.
We who are redeemed may struggle with sin, but we have a new nature, and the victory in Jesus.
