How do we understand the subject of God's discipline in the light of God's sovereignty? When our lives are turned upside down by trial, we need good theology to remain standing.

The way to persevere through trial is to understand it as fatherly discipline of a child. Those who submit learn how to be righteous and to better avoid evil, although it is never pleasant at the time. Lest we become bitter, we need to understand that God's intentions towards us are only good. In fact, our very trials may well be a proof of our salvation.

Like Job, we may never know the reason for our suffering; but we can take heart that God is making us more like Christ, and there is no better thing.
