PSALM 46 — REVISED

Faith Dispels Fear

Brethren, in our lives we will face great difficulties and challenges in many different ways. Unbelievers live lives without purpose and hope, enslaved to their fears (Heb 2:15). While you have been freed from your fear of death through your faith in Jesus Christ. No longer do you have to live enslaved to your fears, for God frees His people from slavery to sin to be slaves of Christ. In the midst of uncertainty and confusing times, Psalm 46 is a remedy for the chaos, as it points you towards God.

Brethren, God is your refuge, strength, and help in times of trouble (46:1). In light of these truths, the psalmist says that there is no reason to fear. The mountains may come crashing down, the seas may roar and the world may be in chaos; yet the you can have confidence in God (46:2-3).

God is present to comfort His people. His protection and provision are like a flowing river (46:4). The true source of security is in the reality of God’s presence (46:5). Even if the nations rise up against God’s people, they will not be shaken (46:6-7). There is deliverance and help when circumstances seem the darkest. A new day will dawn after the darkest night (46:5).

You can have hope in all circumstances because final victory belongs to the Lord (46:8-9). In the future God will bring an end to wars, and all people will cease their tumult and recognise God’s sovereignty (46:9-10). Brethren, this is our hope... The wicked will be judged and God will be exalted in all the earth (46:10). Even in hard times you can take comfort that nothing is outside of His knowledge and control (46:11). Confidence, comfort, and hope in Christ dispel fear.
