A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
Martin Luther based his great hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” on this psalm. With God as your fortress, your life and future are secure. Believers in all times have been reminded in this psalm that there is only one place of safety, faith in God. Confidence in God and being aware of His presence in your enables you to live in chaotic and troubling circumstances without dread.
In it, psalmist says that God’s people should not fear because God is their Refuge in tribulations, Strength in trials, and Help in troubles (46:1).
God is your Refuge in the midst of danger (46:1). A refuge is a shelter used for protection in a storm or war. God alone is the only secure refuge for the storms of life. Brethren, you can trust that no matter how bad your circumstances become, His love and care for you will never change (Rom 8:38-39).
God is also your source of strength when life is hard (46:1). God does not leave you without the strength to endure the trials of life (Col 1:11; 1 Peter 4:11). The Holy Spirit gives you the strength the live righteously, and the endurance to carry on in trying times. His grace is perfected in your weakness; trust in Him (2 Cor 12:9).
God is your present help in times of trouble (46:1). God will do for His people what they cannot do for themselves. God knows when you are in difficult situations and that you are in need. Believers, you can live without fear in times of trouble when there is no way out because God is with you (46:2-3). In situations where there is no earthly hope, God is your hope and help.
