Confidence in God Comes From a Knowledge of God
Last week we began to look at this psalm and how David praises God for His gracious work of salvation. David was in a troubling situation and he absolutely trusted that God was going to save him (1-2). David demonstrates his great faith in his responses to the grace of God in his life. First, he tells of God’s grace by praising Him in the congregation (1-3). David says God’s children are truly blessed. His good thoughts toward his people are too wonderful to comprehend (4-5).
Second, David commits to obeying God’s word as his spiritual act of worship (6-8). Sacrifice and offerings mean nothing if they are not an out working of a believing heart (6) True understanding of God and His will are found in the Scriptures (7-8). God has opened David’s mind to understand the truth, and David delights to do God’s will. He understands that God desires His people to obey him out of love and gratitude from a believing heart.
Third, David declares the truth of the gospel to those around him (9-10). He has not hidden what he has learned, but rather spoken of God’s salvation by grace through faith to the congregation (10).
Fourth, David consistently prays to God for God’s help in the midst of his difficulties (11-17). David is confident in God because of His nature and past works (40:11, 16). He knows that God is able to help His people in their time of need (40:13). He prays that his enemies would be rebuked by God (40:14-15). David’s chief concern during this trial is that God be magnified through his life and praise (40:16-17). Brethren, let your life & your praise magnify God at all times!
