PSALM 31 — REVISED — PART 1

Confidence in God (part 1)

Where do you go when life gets tough? King David tells us that God is his refuge, strength, and fortress in tough times.

Confidence in the LORD is based off of God’s nature (31:3-4). God is righteous (1), strong (2), and trustworthy to save (2). God continually leads and guides the faithful in their lives (3) and delivers them from their enemies (4). David knows that God is with him and will continue to be with him because of God’s nature and a lifetime of experiencing God’s faithfulness. Brethren, you can have that same confidence. God reveals Himself to His people through His word.

Confidence in the LORD is knowing that no matter what circumstances we are in we can trust God (31:5-6). It is into God’s hand that we can commit ourselves in this life and the life to come (5). We can entrust ourselves to God because He is our “Redeemer” (5). He is a God of truth and will never lie or be false. Unlike the dumb idols, God hears our prayers and cares about our plight. As we trust in the truth, we will naturally regard all falsehood with disdain.

Confidence in the LORD is expressed in praise and prayer (31:7-13). David celebrates God’s loyal love for His people (7). It is this love that is the reason for God’s deliverance and guidance of His people (8). Prayer is the natural response to hard circumstances and fear (9-13). In light of God’s love you can cry out to God for mercy (9). He has seen your plight and knows your troubles, and keeps you from even more grievous harm (7-8).

David helps all who read these words to have confidence, assurance, and hope in every circumstance of life.
