PSALM 139 - PART 2

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

God created mankind as the pinnacle of His creation (Gen 1:26-31). Every boy and girl born in this world is special. They are given life and formed by Him in their mother’s womb. They are created in God’s image. They have wills, reasoning minds, intelligence, creativity, and consciences. David says that every child is fearfully and wonderfully made (139:13-14). In the first half of this psalm David meditates on the omniscience and omnipresence of God (139:1-12). In this second half, David contemplates God’s Sovereignty and Justice.

David continues to think about God’s care for him and God’s sovereign hand in his life (13-18). David reveres God, because He was the one who formed him in his mother’s womb (13-16). David says that God created him and ordained and numbered the days of his life (16). David acknowledges God’s intentions toward him are precious and too vast to comprehend (17-18). Brethren, God is sovereign over your life. You were chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4). God knew you while you were yet in your mother’s womb. The number of your days on this earth is known exactly by God. He is sovereign over your life. In spite of your continued disobedience and fleshly weaknesses God has only good intentions (thoughts) toward you (17-18).

David also meditates on the justice of God (19-24). He prays that God would execute justice on the wicked around him (19). They are the enemies of God and blasphemy against God (20). David is righteously indignant and rejects those who hate God (21). The enemies of God are the enemies of His people. David concludes with a prayer that he would live worthy of the God he has been meditating on. Brethren, let us live worthy of Jesus Christ.
