God Knows You & Cares About You (Part 1)
David pondered his fellowship with God in Psalm 139. The meditations of David centre around four perfections of God: His Omniscience (1-6), His Omnipresence (7-12), His Sovereignty (13-18), and His Justice (19-24). We are going to look at the first two this week.
David begins by describing how God knows him intimately (1). God knows his actions, his thoughts, and every path he has taken (2-3). God even knows what he is going to say even before he says it (4). The thought that God evaluates mankind in this way makes David uneasy (5). He feels like he is boxed in by God; like an insect under the palm of a hand (6). He feels helpless before the piecing gaze of God (6). Brethren, it is natural for us to respond this way to the total omniscience of God. It is too wonderful for us to think about. God knows each one of us intimately; nothing is hidden from His sight.
David thinks about fleeing from God’s piercing gaze he knows that he cannot escape God (7). God is everywhere. If he could ascend to heaven or descend into Sheol, God will be there (8). If was as fast as the rays of the sun, or even dive down to depths of the sea, God is there (9). In thinking about God’s presence of God everywhere, David is reminded of the love of God for His people (10). David is comforted, for even in dark places nothing is hidden from God’s sight (11-12).
Brethren, we cannot flee from the presence of God. He knows us better that we know ourselves. This overwhelming thought should lead us to rest, knowing that God is always near to His people no matter how dark the circumstances are around them.
