PSALM 119:105-112 — NUN

Light in a Dark World

Have you ever had the lights go out in your home and not been able to see anything? The smallest light can dispel fear and give great comfort. The psalmist in this stanza describes his light in the midst of of a dark and evil world.

The psalmist begins by declaring that God’s word is of great value to him. God’s Word Gives Divine Guidance (105-106). The Scriptures reveal God’s will for the believer; and living according to it brings blessing. In light of this fact, the psalmist swears an oath that he will be obedient to God’s word. Brethren, the truth is reality as God sees it. We must live our lives according to the commands of Scripture is we desire to please God. The only source of truth is God’s revelation.

The psalmist continues by asking God to give him strength in the midst of the trials in his life. God’s Word Revives (107-110). The psalmist is “afflicted,” and the wicked are constantly trying to trap him and cause him to stumble. Yet, in the midst of this great trouble he does not forget the Scriptures. Rather he has been consciously obedient to God’s word 109), and not sought answers and help from another source (110). Brethren, seek wisdom from God’s word and allow God to revive you with truth about Himself and His will.

The psalmist concludes with pronouncement that God’s Word Brings Joy (111-112). He rejoices because God’s word is an eternal blessing from the Lord (111). It brings joy because it increases our faith by revealing the character of God, it instructs in righteous living, and it keeps a person from evil. The psalmist determines in his heart to obey God’s word. Brethren, obedience brings blessing both now and into eternity.
