For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. — Mark 10:45
Ransom implies a cost; a payment. Jesus says that He has come to give His life as a ransom for many. Meaning, His life has enough value to cover the cost of setting many people free. Clearly this is no ordinary transaction for at least five reasons.
One. The price involves not regular currency but blood. … you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold … but with precious blood … the blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18-19
Two. This blood brings freedom for the individual … through death He might … free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. Hebrews 2:14-15
Three. The price was paid for those who could not free themselves; and who did not deserve liberation anyway. … For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6
Four. The price was fully sufficient to cover the greatest cost of all … the wrath of God against sin. … Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. Romans 5:9
Five. This death secures eternal life. … For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
May we be ever grateful for the ransom that Christ has paid to secure our salvation.
