PSALM 95

A Call to Worship the Incomparable God

Psalm 95 is a call to worship God by His people. It explains why they should worship their great and good God, and warns that not worshiping Him is unbelief. This psalm can be divided into two parts: A Call to Corporate Worship (95:1-7), and A Call to Wholehearted Worship (7-11). The psalm begins by imploring God’s people to sing and should with exuberance to the Lord (95:1-2). Brethren, we should joyfully have this desire to praise our Lord because we are recipients of His grace. After all, He is the “rock of our salvation.”

This psalm calls God’s people to worship God for His incomparable nature (95:1-5). God is great, He is King over all of universe (95:3). No man made gods can compare with Him in His power and splendour. From the highest mountains to the deepest abyss, He rules on High (95:4). He is the Creator of all the earth (95:5). Brethren, let us give public thanks for all God’s mighty works when we come together to worship as the assembled church (95:2). The psalmist also extols God’s goodness as a reason to worship Him (95:6-7). We are His chosen sheep, and He is our Maker and our Great Shepherd. Christ loves His sheep and laid down His life for His sheep (John 10:11).

It is impossible to worship God without obedience to His commands (95:7-11). Hardening ones heart is to stubbornly refuse to do what you know is right (95:8). The Israelites grumbled and refused to trust God in the wilderness. Because of unbelief, they missed out on God’s rest (His blessings and presence) (95:10-11). The author of Hebrews quotes this psalm in Hebrews 4, and challenges his readers to find their rest (salvation) in Christ alone (Heb 3:12-4:13).
