PSALM 108

Be Exalted Oh God

This psalm is a combination of Psalm 57:7-11 and Psalm 60:5-11, both written by David. This psalm is a psalm of praise to the Lord, that He would be exalted above all the earth. This psalm is extremely God centric, in that it includes six mentions of Elohim (God). The focus is on God and His love, mercy, and power demonstrated to His people.

David is firmly established in his faith so that his affections and his actions are loyal to God (108:1-6). He sings praises with all his glory (108:1). His unwavering faith produces a joy in his heart that bursts forth into song. The praise of the Lord honours Him properly for His love and truth. He calls for God to be glorified above all, receiving the honour and worship He deserves (108:5). The end result of this prayer and praise is a call for God to save him(108:6). Brethren, our growing faith in the Lord should produce a joy that is not conditional on circumstances (Phil 4:4).

David ends this psalm by being encouraged in his faith by the word of God (108:7-13). God has declared to the nation of Israel that the land is His and He will apportion it to His people (108:7-8). It is God that brings victory over His people’s enemies (108:9). David acknowledges that without God’s help there can be no hope of victory (108:10-12). It is the King who will give victory, not man (108:12-13). Brethren, you can be encouraged that He God will protect you (Rom 8:38-39), and He will perfect you (Rom 8:28-30), and you will be victorious over the flesh, the devil, and the world (1 John 5:4-5).
