PSALM 33 (Part 1)

Four Reasons to Praise God

In Psalm 33 as the psalmist praises God and presses the assembly to do the same, he gives 4 reasons to praise God. Let us join in with the psalmist and “Sing for joy in the LORD!”

The 1st Reason to Praise God is for His Word (33:6-9). God’s word is right and good (33:4).

It is through God’s word that all things were created. Men should respond to God’s creation with reverence and fear (33:8). Because of sin, man does not submit to the Lord and is in rebellion against God and is an enemy of God. This relationship is restored in the reconciliation that takes place through the sacrificial work of the Lord Jesus Christ (Col 1:21-22). Believers you can praise God for His Word. It reveals the character and nature of our God, and tells you of His great works that deserve our praise.

The 2nd Reason to Praise God is for His Sovereign Works (33:10-12). The LORD accomplishes his plans while frustrating the plans of men (33:10). God’s counsel (His plan) is eternal, and will not be stopped and will not change (33:11). God is sovereign over all of history. As part of His plan, God chose the nation of Israel and blessed them by His own presence (33:12). Even though they have hardened their hearts against their Messiah, in the future they will look upon the one they have pieced and mourn (Zech 12:10).

Believers, you can trust in God and you can hope in Him (33:21-22). He has given you His word to reveal His nature and will, and He is in control in a world that is chaotic. Rejoice in Him!
