PSALM 27

God Is My Light

Have you ever stopped to consider light? Light dispels the darkness, it illuminates that which is hidden, it provides understanding, and it gives life. David says in Psalm 27 “The LORD is my light and my salvation.” God gives His people joy, knowledge of the truth, and eternal life. Jesus said in John 14:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” All of God’s people, of all time, can say that He is our salvation (27:1).

What is David’s response to God’s character and works? He says he will not fear and have needless anxiety (27:2). If evildoers surround him, and adversaries war against him, he will remain confident in the LORD (27:2-3). This confidence is strengthened by his visits to the sanctuary of the LORD all the days of his life (27:4). Among God’s people the psalmist shouts praises to God for his protection and grace (27:4-5).

David’s confident response to God’s character and works are the key to this psalm. He gives believers an example of confidence in the LORD, no matter what circumstance they may face. It is a confidence that understands that God is gracious to His people in their time of need (27:7). They have no need of fear and anxiety because God is with them (27:8). Believers must respond to God’s salvation with faithful obedience, in according to God’s revealed will in the Scriptures (27:11).

Be encouraged, brethren, if you are going through difficult times. Follow David’s example, and courageously wait for the LORD (27:13-14). In Him you will never be disappointed!
