CAPTIVATED - WITH WHAT?

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

I was amused, yet somewhat perplexed recently, by a message conveyed through a picture that came across my computer screen. This picture was a real life, every day scene to most of us. It was a photo of at least a dozen people waiting at a bus stop. Not an unusual scene, but what the photo highlighted was one person who stood out among all the rest of the herd! He stood out like a sore thumb because he was the only one of the whole bunch not absorbed with a mobile screen device! He was watching a world go by, all on his own!

This reminded me how technology generally speaking, has dictated so much about how we live, how we spend our time, money and energy. Though technology is ever on the move, its design with all its good and bad, gears our minds, time, how we live and work into being technology dependent zombies!

I love technology; don’t get me wrong on this. But how much like and closely linked is technology to our culture at large. Culture’s driving force is Satan, (“the god of this world,” 2Cor. 4:4) who is on the move and gears culture to captivate our minds, time & how we live! That is Satan’s agenda for culture.

What are we captivated with? Are we like the technology captivated bus stop waiters, and allowing culture to dictate our terms for living? Or are we like the guy who stood out because his interests were captivated by a bigger perspective!

May Christ, Heaven & eternity, captivate us so much that the culture will see us standing out and being different. Alfred Gibbs said; Unless there is within us, that which is above us, we will soon yield to what is around us.
