What Christians Pursue
The Pursuit of the Word of God, Part 2
Psalm 119
29 April 2018
Why would we pursue something we do not understand? We need to know the purpose of God's Word if we are to desire it.
Certainty that produces sanctification (v. 38). The psalmist prays to take his eyes from temporal to eternal things by establishing God's Word in him. He prays that God might keep him from temptation by seeing the joy, life, and peace of God's ways.
Obedience that is absolute (v. 4). Our hearts should desire to align themselves with God's law, however often we fail. God's laws are to be fully obeyed, and this should be our desire, like the psalmist.
Understanding that is Godly (v. 130). This understanding is not according to human philosophy or wisdom, but according to the mind of God. Only light can give light, and only God can reveal the truth about himself. As Jesus said, "I AM the light of the world."
Praise that is unending (v. 175). God saves us not just for our own happiness, but so that we may praise him. Eternity is not about us, but about God's praise. As the psalmist says, "let my soul live, so that it may praise you."
