Trials are the crucibles that reveal who we really are.

To respond rightly when life gets tough, we first need to have a joyful attitude. That is, we are to understand trials as from God. Joy is not about emotions, as we may still be downcast, but it is the decision to look up in faith.

Don't be surprised if trials come your way, instead expect them in this fallen world: but use them as an opportunity to reflect Christ. Our natural response to trials is to seek the quickest way of escape. However, James exhorts us to view trials with a sense of deep-seated confidence in the goodness of God.

Remember, trials are refining. The intention God always has for trials is moving us towards holiness and joy. If our response if not right though, they can become temptations instead. We can endure trials because we know they will end, and God is with us always.

Desire the outcome of trials. The testing of faith produces endurance. It purges us from sin, and purifies our faith so that we may be mature and complete. So the Christian’s maturity depends on their response to their trials.

If we submit to God and are faithful to endure the trials He allows in our lives, then, as James says, we will be lacking in nothing.
