Much of the Western world will celebrate Easter this weekend without a thought toward what Easter really means. They kinda know a little about Easter’s Christian roots, but if you ask people who Jesus Christ is, you will get a myriad of responses. Some will say that He was a good teacher or good man, a prophet even, some will say that there is no such person as the historical Jesus and call Him a fable handed down through the centuries, others will claim ignorance.
The world we live in thinks that the gospel message of a Saviour dying on a cross and rising again is foolishness (1 Cor 1:18). The gospel is an offence. It goes against human pride, and thus everything that they believe about themselves. Because of the deceptiveness of their own hearts, (Jer 17:9) they falsely believe that they are good and able to discern truth through their own reason (Rom 3:10-12; 1 Cor 2:14). To accept by faith that they are wretched sinners in need of saving is unacceptable. Then to believe that salvation comes from God’s grace alone through faith alone, in a crucified and resurrected Christ is too much is too much for prideful man (1 Cor 1:18-25). They will not accept that they cannot save themselves.
Do not be surprised brethren when the world is confused and bemused when you say you are going to worship Jesus this weekend with His Church. Give glory to the Lamb of God who was slain for our sins and rose again on the third day. Praise be to God that He granted us faith to believe. We know the true meaning of Easter. He is risen... He is risen indeed.
