PSALM 36 — PART 2 — REVISED

God Loves His People

What are we to do in a world of uncertainty and wickedness? What are we to do when it seems like mankind has no fear of their coming judgement? David’s response to the wicked is to contrast them with the character of God. No matter what happens in the world around us, God’s character does not change.

David says that God’s lovingkindness and His faithfulness have no limits when it comes to His people (36:5). His love for His people is precious, a more prized possession than anything that any man could want. God gives it freely to his children (36:5-6), and they live securely in His sovereign hand (36:7). What a comfort this is to believers living in a world that is hostile and in ever growing corruption (Rom 8:21).

David says God’s righteousness is unattainable and His judgements are unfathomable (36:6). Man cannot know God’s great plans apart from what He has revealed in the Scriptures. God provides the light that believers need to understanding the world they live in, and understand it as God does (36:9).

God is the believer’s hope and salvation, He alone preserves man & beast (36:6). He is the fountain that flows with life (36:9), not just eternally, but for the here and now as well (Jn 10:10). Spiritual life flows from the Head, Jesus Christ, to the rest of the body (Col 1:18).

What a great picture of God. His love for us is more precious than anything! Let us pray like David, and ask God for help in the midst of hard circumstances, lest our own pride or the ungodly of this world lead us to turn away from our Lord (36:11).
