The Mighty Power of God
Have you ever been in a powerful thunderstorm in which the wind blew furiously and the thunder boomed repeatedly? David experiences this phenomena and writes Psalm 29 of his experience. When faced with the great power of nature, believers in awesome wonder cannot help but give God praise for His great power.
David begins by calling his brethren to give praise to the Lord for the glory that is rightly due His name (1-2). He praises God and calls for worship because of God’s supernatural power demonstrated in His sovereign control over nature (2). When you see wondrous power and beauty in nature, do you stop and give praise to the powerful God who made these things?
David says that God should be praised for His powerful control over nature by His word (3-9).
David tells of a thunderstorm moving from over the Great Sea, crossing over the inhabited lands of Israel, and then on into the wilderness. Each step of its journey is attributed to the voice of the Lord. The voice of the Lord is mentioned seven times here by David (Rev 10:3). Witnessing God’s power should join lead to worship that gives God glory (9). Brethren, we glorify God by extolling His nature and works with our lips and actions.
David concludes by exalting God as sovereign over all aspects of His people’s lives (10). It was God’s power that was demonstrated during the great flood of Noah and is demonstrated every day in the wondrous workings of nature (10). It is this same strength (1,11) that God gives His people so that they can overcome the world (11). Just as God calms the fury of the thunderstorm, so can He give peace to His people no matter what storms they may face.
