PSALM 27 — REVISED

Fear God and Dread Nought

Have you ever stopped to consider light? Light dispels the darkness, it illuminates that which is hidden, it provides understanding, and it gives life. David says in Psalm 27 “The LORD is my light and my salvation.” God gives His people joy, knowledge of the truth, and peace even in the midst of fearful circumstances.

What is David’s response to the fear he was feeling? He dwells on the character of God and his personal fellowship with Him (1). God is his defence even when evildoers surround him, and adversaries war against him. David declares that he will remain confident in the LORD and not give in to his dread (2-3). David knows that he is strengthened by God in his circumstances by worshipping with God’s people and meditating on the word of God (4-6). Because of his meditation on the Scriptures, David has confidence that God is gracious to His people in their time of need (7-10).

Brethren, fear of God is the solution to worldly fear. Fear of God is a humble reverence for the person and works of God demonstrated in obedience to His word. If we are focused on the nature of Almighty God (His power, love, holiness, ect...), then whatever circumstances we are facing pale in comparison to God Himself. David’s confident response to God’s character and works are the key to this psalm. He gives believers an example of confidence in the LORD, no matter what circumstance they may face. Personal anxiety is overcome through a fear of God and courage to trust God in every circumstance (27:11).

Be encouraged, brethren, if you are going through difficult times. Follow David’s example, and courageously wait for the LORD (27:13-14). In Him you will never be disappointed!
