The Confidence of the Righteous
Are you experiencing the vicious tongue of the ungodly around you? If you have, then you can relate to King David in this psalm. His response serves as a guide for all the righteous. In great distress, David pens this psalm as a prayer to God.
David begins with an appeal to God to give attention to his prayer (1-3). He is groaning, at the malicious attacks of the wicked around him (1). His quiet groaning gives way to a loud cry to God for help (2). His situation is urgent and the need for help is great. His appeal is to his God, the object of his personal faith (2). He will eagerly wait for God to answer him (3). Brethren, our prayers must begin with a heartfelt cry out to our God, knowing that He cares for us and hears us.
David continues by stating his confidence that God hates the ungodly and loves the righteous (4-7). David declares that God cannot abide the deeds of the ungodly, because in Him there is no evil (4). God is holy, and cannot abide wickedness. For David, those that are ungodly are not able to enter into the sanctuary. The arrogant, who boast about themselves, will not be able to stand before God Almighty (5). God hates, or rejects utterly, those who continually live a life of iniquity. Those that speak lies, and practice deceit are an abomination to the Lord. They shall face His wrath (6). Brethren understand that God does judge the wicked. Romans 1 says that a method of God’s judgment is to give the ungodly over to their depraved minds, to reap the full consequences of their evil. Ultimately, they will face eternal punishment at the judgment of Jesus Christ (Rev 20:11-15).
