PSALM 2

The Rule of the King

All rulers that have ever ruled, or will rule, govern at the pleasure of the King of Kings. God sets the boundaries of the nations (Deut 32:8), their existence (Isa 40:15-17), and the rule of their kings (Dan 2:21). In Psalm 2 the kings of the earth are admonished to submit to God and His Messiah. Jesus is this Messiah, and this psalm speaks of opposition to His rule during His Millennial kingdom.

The nations of the world despise God’s rule, they see it as bondage and desire to break free of His rule and standards (1-3). They “rage” against God’s Anointed and devise plans to oppose Him (1-2). God responds to the rebels and laughs at their feeble rebellion (4-5). The nations will be soundly defeated because God has established His King upon the Davidic throne in Jerusalem and He rules by His decree (6). This decree of God is in 2 Samuel 7, made to David and His descendants forever. The King is not only a ruler, but is God’s son by covenant. The sons of David are God’s sons, culminating with Jesus, the Son of God. The Son will rule over all the nations with a rod of iron shattering all those who oppose Him (8-9). The psalmist says this as a warning to those that are considering rebelling against His authority (10-12). He says that al must submit to the Son and worship Him so that they will not perish (10-11). Brethren, what a comfort it is to know that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess Jesus as Lord (Phil 2:10). Truly, how blessed are those that find their safety and security in the King (12).
