Hallelujah, God Is Our Help and Our Hope!
This psalm begins and ends with a Hallelujah, or a praise to the Lord. The psalmist commits to praise the Lord with his whole being (1-2). He is in a personal relationship with His God: “I will sing praises to my God” (2).
After committing to praise the Lord the psalmist points out how foolish it is for people to trust in rulers/politicians and mortal men because their security is fleeting, for they cannot offer eternal salvation (3). Every person will die, and all their plans will perish with them (4). In contrast to this how blessed is the person that trusts in the Lord (5). Brethren, it is foolish to place our trust and hope in politicians and leaders who promise safety and security. They cannot even keep themselves safe and secure, and will in the end go down into the grave. God is our help in all circumstances in the present and our hope in the future (5).
God is to be praised because He is Creator of all things (6). Secondly, He is forever trustworthy (6). Thirdly, He is a God of justice for those that experience injustice (7). Fourthly, God opens the eyes of the spiritually blind, exalts the humble, and loves the righteous (8). Fifthly, God protects and provides for those that are weak and lack power and resources (9). Sixthly, God opposes the proud and will not allow the wicked to prosper forever (9). Brethren, God is worthy of our praise because of these things.
The psalmist ends this psalm with a call for the people of God to praise their God from generation to generation (10). Brethren, praise God, “Your God,” to all generations; for He is sovereign and reigns on high forever.
