PSALM 16

Joy in the Midst of Troubles

Troubles are something that is common to all people. No matter how well we plan our lives unexpected circumstances always come upon us. David, in Psalm 16, finds himself in a dire crisis. Yet, he expresses confidence and joy in God’s goodness in three ways: The Protection of God (1-4), the Provision of God (5-8), and the Preservation of God (9-11).
David begins this psalm with a prayer to God for His protection (1-4). David asks for God’s preservation. After this he turns to speak about the confidence he has in God rather than the situation around him. He publicly confesses his faith and dependence upon God in all aspects of his life (2-3). David declares that God is his refuge and not the vain idols of this world (4).

Like the Levites of old, God is the believer’s portion in this world. Whatever our lot in life, or whatever cup we have to drink it is from our good God. God has given His people physical blessings and eternal blessings that are satisfying and pleasurable (5-6). God not only blesses His people, but He guides them and gives them wisdom from His word (7). Because of God’s presence in our lives we can live confidently without fear (8).

David concludes this psalm with a declaration of his great joy in the preservation of God (9-11). He takes the principles of 1-8 and applies them to his current circumstances. He rejoices to know that God looks after him in this life (9), and knows that there will be a coming resurrection in which he will not be forgotten (10). He is confident that God will guide him while he is alive and he will experience the joy of being in God’s presence both now and forever (11).
