Divine Protection for the Pilgrim
The psalm is part of the Psalms of Ascents that the people of Israel would recite as they made their way to Jerusalem to worship. In this psalm the psalmist looks to God to help him on his journey as a pilgrim. Brethren, we are pilgrims ourselves in this world. Our citizenship is in heaven (Phil 3:20), and we live as sojourners upon this earth (1 Peter 1:1). In this psalm we can see: The Pilgrim’s Helper and The Pilgrim’s Protector.
The psalmist begins with a great declaration that the Lord is his helper (1-2). He lifts up his eyes to the dangerous mountains through which he must travel. Slippery paths, deep valleys, wild animals, and robbers are but some of the dangers the pilgrims might face. As he thinks about the dangers of his journey he asks the rhetorical question, “Where does my help come from?” His help comes from the Lord, the creator of heaven and earth. Brethren, God will lead us on dark and dangerous paths. He does not promise us a smooth journey, but rather He guarantees His presence with us (Ps 23).
The psalmist next extols that believers have a protector (3-8). God is always on guard, He is always omnipresent to provide help and protection (3-5). He never takes a break from His watch over His people. God will fulfil His promises to never leave or forsake His people (Heb 13:5). God provides relief and comfort during the hard journey (shade in v. 5); and His people are safe in His care, both day and night (6). Brethren, the Lord will protect you from all the calamities (evil) of life. Nothing can harm your soul which lies in His hand (Jn 10:12). God’s care is now and forevermore (8).
