The Reliability of God’s Word
What do we want most in our vehicles? We want them to be reliable to start and work the same in every situation. In this stanza the psalmist speaks of the reliability of God’s word. You can trust God’s word to be sufficient and effective in any and every situation of life.
The psalmist speaks of God’s word being reliable because it is based on the nature of God (119:137-138). God is by nature just and right. All his dealings with man are right and good (137). His word was given to mankind to reveal what is right according to God (138). God has faithfully given His righteous standard to His people. Brethren, God’s word is reliable as THE right standard for our lives because it reflects the righteousness of God Himself.
The psalmist then relates that this reliability of God’s word has produced a zeal for the Scriptures in his life (139). He has a passion over things that really matter. Keeping God’s commandments is his focus even though the world around him dismisses them or ignores them. The Scriptures have proven themselves to be pure and right throughout his life, and his love for them is ever growing (140). He will remain faithful to God’s truth even when he is despised by the world (141). Brethren, you can trust in God’s word, because it reveals God’s unchanging nature and perspective on all things (142).
The psalmist concludes by stating that the reliability of God’s word has brought him great comfort in times of difficulty (143). He would have been overwhelmed if not for his delight in the Scriptures. His desire to understand the truth stems from his desire to live out his purpose in this life...to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (144).
