Dire Circumstances Demonstrate Our Faith
Have you ever been in a situation where you had no recourse but to wait on God? No matter how much wealth you had, or how much you planned, or how hard you tried, you could do nothing to change your circumstances. Know that God puts us in trying circumstances so that our faith will be strengthened and our doubts exposed.
The psalmist here in Psalm 119:81-88 is experiencing circumstances that are so dire that his strength is failing. He cries out to God “languishing” for God’s deliverance (119:81). He has had no choice but to wait on the Lord; and in a moment of great honesty he says he is tired of waiting (119:82). His body has become like a shrivelled wine skin; yet his faith remains strong. He waits for comfort by God in his time of need (119:83). Brethren, no matter what your situation God is not far off. He cares for you. Wait on Him and trust in His sovereign purposes for you in your trial.
The psalmist is feeling the full effects of the situation, as the wicked persecute him for no good reason (119:85-86). The psalmist asks God to vindicate his faith and execute justice upon those who ignore and scorn His word (119:84, 86). Brethren, wait on God, knowing that when our Lord returns our faith will be vindicated and Jesus will execute justice upon the wicked of this world.
The psalmist concludes this stanza by declaring that his faith has been demonstrated in his obedience to God’s word. He now waits upon God’s strength to help him endure this trial (119:88). He needs God’s help to live faithfully in the midst of hard circumstances (119:88). Brethren, what a great example for us.
