PSALM 134

Gathering Together Is A Blessing

This psalm is all about worshipping God corporately for His great blessings upon His people. The people in turn receive a blessing from the Lord in that their faith in Him grows and their desire for obedience is strengthened (134:1-3). This can only happen through the corporate gathering of the saints.

The tendency for many Christians is to think of themselves in solely individualistic terms before the Lord. Yes all believers must relate personally to God in matters of salvation: sin, faith, and personal holiness. Yet, this is only part of the life God has called you to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. You have been saved as individuals and simultaneously united together with all other Christians into the Body of Christ (Eph 3:6).

Just as each part of your physical body is necessary for the proper working of the whole, you are a necessary part of the church for it to operate properly (1 Cor 12:12-14). It is within the body of Christ that we obey Christ’s command to His church in John 13:34, “...that you love one another, even as I have loved you...” This command sums up all the other “one another” commands found throughout the New Testament. Worship on Sunday involves praise of God and service to His people in love. It is impossible to be obedient to Christ’s command apart from regular life within the church. All believers are to demonstrate love for their fellow saints in a sacrificial way; putting others needs and desires above their own. Your love for Christ and His people is demonstrated in obedience to His commands (Jn 14:15) The world takes notice of this sacrificial love for others that is so unlike their own self-centred and self-gratifying lives; and as a result God is glorified (Jn 13:35).
