PSALM 129

Persecuted, But Not Forsaken

Have you experienced trouble in this life because of Christ? The Scriptures tell us that this is to be expected. “All who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Tim 3:12). Jesus said Himself, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you” (Jn 15:18). The ancient Israelites were no exception. Why did they face such hated and persecution? The reason is that they were chosen by God to be His people and to honour Him with their lives. The world cannot abide the truth in their midst exposing their lies. People are confronted with the true righteousness of God (129:4), and holy standard they can never live up to. People are haters of God first, and haters of all who would seek to honour Him (Rom 1:30).

Israel’s history is replete with examples of persecution, even from their beginnings in Egypt (129:1-2). The faithful bear many scars from the emotional and physical wounds by the evil of this world (129:3). Yet, the enemies of God do not win (129:2). God does not allow their evil to continue forever. He cuts the cords of their ropes and sets His people free. The Lord is righteous! He does not forget His promises to His people (129:4). Brethren, God has promised to work all things for your good and His glory (Rom 8:28).

Do not despair when you are troubled by the wicked in this life. You can pray as the psalmist does that the wicked would be shamed by their opposition to God (129:5), that they find little success in their evil deeds (129:6-7), and that they receive no blessings for their wickedness (129:8). Brethren, be encouraged, God is righteous and faithful to deliver His people from evil (Matt 6:13).
