Trusting in God Alone
This psalm has been an encouragement to believers for thousands of years, and it can encourage you as well. This psalm can be divided into three segments: The Psalmist’s Trust in God (91:1-2), The Psalmist’s Teaching (91:3-13), and The Lord’s Promise (91:14-16).
The psalmist lays out the principle in verse 1, that the person who trusts in the Lord will dwell in the safety and security of God presence. He himself exclaims his trust in God in verse 2.
The psalmist then moves to instruct his readers in their personal trials in the trust of the Lord (91:3-13). God is the one that you should focus on because He delivers from dangers that are seen (men) and dangers that are unseen (pestilence) (91:3-6). Ten thousand may fall around you, but you do not have to fear (91:7). You will not face the judgment of God, because you have made the Lord your refuge and hope (91:8-10). God even gives His angels charge concerning His children. They watch over and protect believers (Heb 1:14)(91:11-12). Because of the presence of God in your life, you are more than survivors, you are victors (91:13).
The psalmist ends this psalm in 91:14-16 with a promise made by the Lord. Those that love the Lord and know Him will be set high above the evil of this world (91:14). God will listen to their prayers and answer them (91:15). He will be with His saints, and rescue them out of trouble (91:15). God will satisfy the believer and He will experience the salvation of the Lord (91:16). Brethren, be assured that God is in sovereign control over all aspects of your life. Look not at the dangers around you, but instead keep your focus wholly directed towards God.
