Dealing With Doubt
Have you ever struggled to see where God is in the midst of hard times? If you have ever struggled with doubts in regards to your faith in God, then know that you are not alone. In Psalm 73, Asaph writes this psalm about a time of spiritual struggle with doubt. As we study God’s word we can see how to deal with our doubts when they arise.
This psalm begins with An Earthly Perspective of Circumstances (73:1-16). Last week we examined how the psalmist looked around him and saw the ungodly of this world living a life of ease and prosperity, while those that fear God have troubles. It drove him to doubt God’s goodness and envy the wicked (73:2-3). He even asked himself the question, “ I am obedient to God for nothing” (73:13)?
What crushed his doubts was A Heavenly Perspective of Circumstances (73:17-28). In turmoil over his struggle the psalmist turns to God to understand (73:17). He goes to the Scriptures and God guides him in truth (73:24). In them he understands the end of the wicked. The true reality is that they are unsafe and insecure (73:18-19). On the outside they may appear secure and happy; but the truth is they are terrified of the future (73:19). They live thinking that they without accountability (73:11); but when the Lord’s patience is over they will face terrible judgment (73:20).
Brethren, doubt can be a painful experience (73:21). But it doesn’t have to lead to despair. Remember that a heavenly perspective is necessary to understand your experiences. God is still with you, no matter what (73:22-24). Your future hope is secure (73:24). Remember the most important things in this life are not wealth, health, or personal happiness, but the Lord God Himself (73:25-28)
