PSALM 75

There Is An Appointed Time of Judgement

Our world is full of boastful, self-sufficient people who refuse to acknowledge God in their lives. This Psalm serves as a warning to the wicked and as an encouragement to the righteous.

The psalmist begins this psalm, in the midst of the congregation, by showering God with thanks; publicly giving God glory for His wondrous works and nearness to His people (75:1). While giving God thanks, the psalmist reminds the congregation that God is sovereign over all the affairs of the earth. In an oracle from God the psalmist relates that God has selected a time for the judgment of the wicked (75:2). God is a fair judge that can be trusted to do what is right. After all, it is God that shows the world common grace by maintaining stability and keeping everything from chaos (75:3). God calls on the ungodly to not boast in their power and position, stubbornly refusing to submit to Him (75:5).

Brethren, there is no hiding from God’s judgement. He is the one who exalts the humble and brings low the proud (75:5-7). The cup of the wrath of God is in the hand of God and ready for the time of judgement (75:8). They will not escape and will face God’s wrathful judgment (75:8)

Brethren, know that even with the evil in this world God will execute justice upon the wicked (75:10). Know that God is sovereign over all of the affairs of mankind, and remember it is because of God’s patience that He has not yet judged the ungodly (2 Peter 3:9). The ungodly will face God’s judgement for their unbelief in His Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:18). While the righteous will exalted with God forever (Ps 75:10; Rev 21:3).
