PSALM 111

Praise the Lord for His Marvellous Works

This psalm is the first of the three Hallelujah (praise) psalms (111-113). “Hallelujah” means “praise the Lord!” In Psalm 111 the psalmist praises God for His great works. He calls all God’s people to Praise the Lord and give thanks for all that God has done (111:1).

Truly great are the works of the Lord that He has done on behalf of His people. His works are worthy of further study by His saints. They are a memorial to be remembered and celebrated by His people (111:4). Believers can delight in them because they reveal the perfections of God (111:2-3). He is just and right and His works of salvation and judgment reveal this. He not only provides for His people’s physical needs, but also remembers His great promises to them, and will see them come to pass (111:5-6). Brethren, the God of the Old Testament that provided food for Israel and led them mightily into the promised land is the same God that we serve. Just as He did for them, He will provide for you (Matt 6:26), and sanctify you (Rom 8:29), and has an inheritance ready for you (1 Peter 1:4), all through the glorious work of the Son of God.

Just as God’s works are true and just, so is His word (111:7). They are sufficient for your life, and able to be trusted and lived out (111:8). God has redeemed His people from their slavery to sin and they are a part of the New Covenant through Jesus Christ (111:9). Brethren, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and understanding. Fearing the Lord is having a humility and respect before an awesome and Holy God (111:9), and worshipping Him as worthy of all praise (111:10).
